APB’s sound is a fusion of punk energy, funk grooves, and new wave sensibilities, often featuring rhythmic basslines, distorted guitars, and Scottish-accented vocals. Their style influenced later bands such as Franz Ferdinand, The Rapture, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. They are known for energetic live performances and rigorous work ethic. APB was formed in 1979 in the rural town of Ellon, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, by Iain Slater (vocals and bass), Glenn Roberts (guitar), and George Cheyne (drums). Initially influenced by heavy rock, the band shifted toward punk after the rise of the UK punk scene, later incorporating funk influences from artists like Parliament, James Brown, and Funkadelic following a trip to France. Their early DIY approach to writing, rehearsing, and performing reflected the ethos of the emerging independent music scene.
