Ehud Asherie Trio

Ehud Asherie, "a master of swing and stride" (The New Yorker), is a jazz pianist who integrates the venerable New York piano tradition into his inventive style. Born in Israel in 1979, Asherie lived in Italy for six years before his family moved to New York. Though he began playing piano as a child, his passion for jazz came later—with a Thelonious Monk cassette tape—and his first visit to Smalls Jazz club in Greenwich Village. Largely self-taught, or rather, “old-schooled,” Asherie learned the ropes at Smalls, spending the wee small hours of his early teens becoming a fixture of the late-night jam sessions. Mentored by the late Frank Hewitt, Asherie began to develop “his virtuosity and his ear for clean, crisp lines“ (The Star-Ledger). From Smalls to the Rainbow Room, from Lincoln Center to The Village Vanguard, Asherie has since worked with a broad range of musicians including: Eric Alexander, Roy Ayers, Peter Bernstein, Jesse Davis, Bobby Durham, Vince Giordano, Wycliffe Gordon, Scott Hamilton, Catherine Russell, Ken Peplowski and Clark Terry. Beyond his dedication to jazz music, Ehud Asherie has also developed a passion for traditional Brazilian music. His appreciation and profound knowledge of the music, language and culture are the foundation of Asherie’s project entitled Bina & Ehud, a duo formed in 2003, with Brazilian guitarist, Bina Coquet. Asherie has toured clubs and festivals around the world, including South America, Europe and Asia. Asherie’s playing can be heard on countless recordings, including the 2010 Grammy Award winning soundtrack of HBO’s ‘Boardwalk Empire’. He recently released his twelfth album as leader entitled Shuffle Along (Blue Heron Records), a solo piano performance of Eubie Blake songs from the musical Shuffle Along. Born in Florida and refined in New York City, Paul Sikivie has lent his buoyant bass to some of jazz's best-loved artists, most notably serving in multi-Grammy winning vocalist, Cécile McLorin Salvant's groups for the past decade. Others who have called on him range from such eminences as Wynton Marsalis, Cole Porter fellow and pianist Aaron Diehl, to musician's musicians like Grant Stewart, Johnny O'Neal, Pasquale Grasso, and the rising star of jazz vocalists, Samara Joy. In his own current project, a chordless sextet, Sikivie explores jazz counterpoints amongst four horns, underlined by active bass and punctuated by swinging drums. Influences range from Ellington, Monk, Elmo Hope to the Baroque practices of canon and fugue. But mostly it's fun... Only a short time after finishing his training at The Juilliard School, Bryan Carter has already began to establish an incredible career.Beginning drums at the age of three, Carter quickly developed a strong passion for music, especially jazz, and by the age of eleven had already studied with legandary drummers Louie Bellson, Harold Jones, and Ed Thigpen. During high school Carter was accepted to the prestigious Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony, the Vail Jazz Workshop, and the Grammy Jazz Ensemble.As a new artist, Carters access to extensive outlets lead to performances at national and international venues and festivals including The Jazz Bistro, Dizzy's Coca- Cola Club, The Vic, The Beverly Hills Hotel, The Millennium Baltimore, Spaghettinis, The Staples Center, The Chicago Jazz Festival, The African Jazz Festival, Iowa City Jazz Festival and The Lima Peru Jazz Festival. He has alsoplayed or recorded with artists such as Clark Terry, Kenny Barron, Ted Nash, Kurt Elling, Terell Stafford, Bobby Watson and Mccoy Tyner.The Bryan Carter Quintet released its first CD entitledEnchantment in May 2011 making impact on the College Music Journal and Jazz Week radio charts.Carter currently resides in New York City, and is a Vic Firth Artist
