Welcome to the lost city of Midian. Hope you survive the experience! Clive Barker followed up the success of his 1987 debut HELLRAISER with NIGHTBREED in 1990, a horror fantasy about the resurrection of a ne'er-do-well (Craig Sheffer) as the messiah of a subterranean society of monsters. The film features many of the trademark Barker touches that made HELLRAISER such a success – the unbridled glee in character design, the use of queer themes in a horror aesthetic (director Alejandro Jodorowsky called the film “the first truly gay horror fantasy epic”), the subversion of religious elements – but NIGHTBREED flopped in its time due to a misguided marketing campaign that foregrounded a serial killer subplot. While this subplot is one of the film's high points as director David Cronenberg camps his way through a role as a masked butcher of families obsessed with hunting the hidden Nightbreed, the true appeal of Barker's sophomore effort lies in the painstakingly conceived grotesquerie of his monsters.
