Gene Bertoncini A mainstay on the New York jazz scene, Saul Rubin graduated from the Hartt School of Music, where he majored in composition and studied jazz with the legendary saxophonist Jackie McLean and saxophonist/arranger Paul Jeffrey, before moving back home to New York. Since then his soulful and virtuosic playing has been heard alongside some of the world's greatest jazz musicians, including Sonny Rollins (touring Europe and the US), Roy Hargrove (he arranged for the Roy Hargrove Big Band album Emergence (Verve, 2009), and has toured extensively with them throughout Europe, Canada, Japan and the US), Renee Fleming, John Hicks, Victor Lewis, Bob Cranshaw, Sammy Figueroa, Johnny O'Neal, Hank Jones, Frank Wess, Cameron Brown, Candido, Winard Harper, Larry Willis, Sue Terry, Essiet Essiet, Willie Jones III, Eric Revis, James Hurt, Gerald Cannon, Sherman Irby, Lew Soloff, Jonathan Batiste, Roberta Gambarini, and many more. In 2009, Saul opened Zeb’s in a New York loft in Chelsea, a performance and production space where countless artists have since performed and recorded. In 2010 he began curating a successful weekly jazz vocal series (hosting and accompanying such luminaries as Gregory Porter, Roseanna Vitro, Nancy Harms, Bob Dorough, Johnny O’Neal, Tessa Souter and Brianna Thomas). For three years he has produced the NYC Jazz Guitar Festival, showcasing some of the world’s best jazz guitarists, including Bucky Pizzarelli, Gene Bertoncini, Peter Bernstein and Paul Bollenback. He has performed at the Blue Note (Tokyo and New York), the Jazz Standard, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, Fat Cat, Smalls, Mezzrow, the Hollywood Bowl, and concert halls all over the world, including London, Vienna, Geneva, Barcelona and Prague. Eric Wheeler is a Washington, DC native and has been studying string bass for 20 years. Encouraged my his mother, he began studying classical music at the age of nine at the DC Youth Orchestra Program in Washington, DC.At age thirteen he was accepted into the Duke Ellington School for the Arts, where he began to study jazz music. At Ellington Eric studied with Carolyn Kellock, a master educator who has also taught world renowned bassist such as Ameen Saleem, Corcoran Holt, and Ben Williams. During his four years at Ellington he had the opportunity to travel to places such as Canada, France, England, and Germany. This greatly influenced Eric to pursue a career in music. In the fall of 1998, Eric was accepted into the prestigious National Symphony Youth Fellowship Program. During this time Eric studied with section bassist of the National Symphony Orchestra, Jeff Weisner. Eric credits Jeff with providing him with a strong technical facility that would help him to earn a solid reputation amongst his musical peers. In the fall of 2000, Eric was accepted into the jazz studies program at Howard University.While attending Howard, Eric worked professionally in the DC metro area as a jazz and classical musician playing at venues such as Bohemian Caverns, Blues Alley, and The Kennedey Center. Eric received both his Bachelor and Masters degrees from Howard University as of May 2006. Since then he has toured the world and performed with many notable jazz artist such as Stephon Harris, Tim Warfield, Benny Golson, Curtis Fuller, Delfeayo Marsalis, Russell Malone, Pharaoh Sanders, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Terell Stafford, and Cyrus Chestnut. Presently, Eric resides in Brooklyn New York and works as a full time musician.
